Book 9, Question 30

Why Do Cravings Happen?

Cravings happen because hormones, habits and feelings can create strong urges for a certain food, not always from hunger.

Cravings happen because body cues, habits, emotions, smells, and memories all nudge you to say, I want that! Not every craving means your body needs a certain nutrient. Cravings are messages, not commands.

Quick answers

Which chemicals play a part?

Very tasty foods can set off hormones such as insulin, cortisol, dopamine, leptin and ghrelin, which all play a part in cravings.
